Kim Bui-Burton

Kim Bui-Burton is the Community Services & Library Director for the City of Monterey, California, USA. She oversees the City's Conference Center, Harbor and Marina, Library, Museums, Parking facilities, Public Art, Recreation and Sports Centers. When appointed, Kim was the country's first Vietnamese-American library director. She now manages 140 FTE and a $37 M budget (general fund and five special funds). Kim is currently excited about the restoration of 7-day a week library service and approval of a $34M conference center renovation, and looking forward to updating the city's 1987 parks and recreation master plan and implementing the West Coast's first fishing community sustainability plan.
Kim is a past President of the California Library Association, a member of the San Jose State University (SJSU) School of Library & Information Science International Advisory Council, the California Preservation Program steering committee, the Chair of a tri-county multiple-type regional library consortium (MOBAC) and has worked nationally on initiatives around heritage and cultural tourism, collections preservation, municipal collaboration and community engagement. Her B.A. Is from the University of California at Santa Cruz and her MLIS is from SJSU.
